A Remedy for Sore Throat

I had a sore throat for almost a couple of weeks. Just a short lecture would trigger itch and discomfort on my throat that I barked like a dog. The worse thing was I had to be part of the panel in an oral defense. I asked sparingly to conserve my voice and not to overuse my throat. I went to the Gents’ room more frequently to spew some phlegm. My sore throat stayed for few days. Mint candies, not even Strepsils, helped me relieved my sore throat. However, I remembered some articles in the Reader’s Digest on the remedies of sore throat. I followed some of them.

I rushed to the supermarket and shopped for lemon, honey, and tea. Lemon-tea with honey is good for sore throat. Take it from me who had a sore throat and got freed from it in just few days. On my first sip, I immediately felt the relief on my throat. And I did it for two times in a day. After three days my sore throat was gone.

Have a sore throat free, drink lemon-tea with honey! A sore throat remedy!

Summer 2012 is Here!

It’s less than a week and second semester ends. For students, it would be a long vacation unless they intend to enroll for the summer classes 2012 or have their on-the-job-training. For graduating students, it would be a long rest unless they want to recoup from the costs of education (it’s not expenses after all, it’s an investment!) and look for job immediately. For some many, summer vacation is for fun under the sun. Beaches and resorts will be herded with vacationers and tourists. We are just hoping that La Nina will give way for the summer. Foods and drinks to refresh us from the heat of the sun will come out soon (some came out already). Halo-halo, a favorite Filipino snack and dessert, will again become available on streets both in the barangay and in the urban areas.

Travel is another perfect activity during vacation. Going offshore has been cheaper than before. Nearby countries in Asia like Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia have many things to offer to their neighbors. If you feel like travelling in the great wall of China, you can contact Zicasso and they’ll plan for you China tours that suit your budget. Travelling let you visit lands and meet people.

Life is beautiful. You have to enjoy it to the fullest!

The Difference Between Theft and Robbery

My classmate in the graduate school, I remember, differentiated theft from robbery. Honestly, before his candid explanation, I didn’t know what’s the difference, I didn’t even bother to know. I could have just let it go, and merely passing across my vocabulary would be enough. Yet, becoming a victim of theft reminded me of robbery as well and the difference between the two. It is so simple. I should not be sharing this with you but it’s a way to at least ease my heavy feelings from the loss.

Robbery is stealing by means of force, coercion, or intimidation. Holdup is robbery because it uses force. When the hold-upper points his gun at you, you need to give the money or valuables to save your life. Theft is stealing through stealth means. There is no coercion. When you left your iPod and somebody took it and didn’t return it to you, that’s theft. With or without the intention to steal, as long as there is no force used to take somebody’s, that is theft.

I’m sad I have been a victim of theft several times. For my tricycle, it’s been thrice. First, my motorcycle’s side covers. Second, it’s name. Third, it’s left side cover again. You thieves, steal no more!

Producers of Knowledge, Not just Consumers

On the final year of my doctorate, I and my classmates in the graduate school attended a seminar organized by the graduate school office which called: “Visioning, Missioning.” One of the guest speakers, who happened to be a former director of the University of the Philippines and DepEd, left the country and now I am not sure if she has finished her doctorate degree in the United States. She said that being in the graduate school, ready to be conferred with graduate degrees, must be producers of knowledge, not just consumers of it. She was emphasizing the role of research in the lives of graduate school students. He cited an experience of an undergraduate student who did a breakthrough research.

I was inspired by her eloquence and wit. A half a decade has past, yet, I am still dominantly consumer of knowledge. Though we are all consumers of knowledge, we shouldn’t stop being so. We create new knowledge and become producers of it. Sadly or happily, besides my dissertation in my doctorate, I conducted only one study since 2007, and it’s now referred and published in the journal of business, education, science and technology. I am planning to propose a new study this summer. This time with a research partner,

Be a producer of knowledge! Conduct research now!

Colegio de Dagupan Celebrates 28th Founding Anniversary

Let x be the length of years of my being a member of Colegio de Dagupan family and y is the age of Colegio de Dagupan, y is twice x. What is x? I hate algebra in high school and even in college. This time, for a while, I set aside my abhorrence toward mathematics except of course to statistics and give way for age problem. Yes, Colegio de Dagupan is now 28 years old! Its age is young yet such number represents its achievements and more.

This February 2012, Colegio de Dagupan celebrates its 28th founding anniversary. The institution has many reasons for celebrations. Each of its colleges has astounding achievements in academics that are envied by other older colleges or universities in Dagupan or even in Pangasinan. Superior board passing rates, championship to competitions regional and national, topnotch board passers, high level of accreditation, centers of development, and more. Truly a tsunami wave of achievements of Colegio de Dagupan!

Congratulations Colegio de Dagupan on your 28th anniversary!

“What is Good Career?” by Mr. Edilberto C. Ortiz, CPA

Some few days ago, I had a blog about the college majors that employers choose to hire this 2012. Business and accounting are on the top of the list. Unbeknownst to me and maybe to many, this forecast or study has been history a few years back. History repeats itself. Demand for certain careers are cyclical because industries as well have cycle with different stages — introduction, growth, maturity, and decline. Industries contract and expand. Some careers, however, are very cyclical. They follow the industry life cycle very fast, they are introduced and suddenly they are in declined. Some careers are non-cyclical. They have been introduced, now they are in growth and stay there for a long time. It would take a very long time before they go into maturity and decline.

In a seminar called “What is Good Career?,” Mr. Edilberto C. Ortiz, CPA emphasized beautifully that careers in accounting are good careers. Maybe you would say that he’s speaking for himself as a Certified Public Accountant. His talk some years ago was not based on personal experiences alone (although that could be one great factor). He had factual data and the reality showed that it was. CPAs earn more in a lifetime than non-CPAs. That is the reason why Mr. Ortiz urged accounting majors to push forward on the field of accounting. A very lucrative career awaits those who become Certified Public Accountants (CPAs).

Well, Mr. Ortiz himself proved true that it really is. He has an accounting firm that already hired Filipino accountants especially those who are alumni of Colegio de Dagupan. The program is made possible through the unfailing effort of Dr. Voltaire P. Arzadon, Colegio de Dagupan President. Dr. Arzadon and Mr. Ortiz partnered to give CPAs of Colegio de Dagupan an exciting career. There are already CPAs that are now based in Chicago, Illinois enjoying success and better life. In my next post, I’ll be uncovering who are those CPAs, what are their former lives, and who are they right now.

Buko Juice or Buko Water?

It is one of the purest drinks. It is pristine and refreshing. Coconut juice or buko juice is a drink for all seasons. In the barangay we used to reside, coconut trees were abundant. I didn’t have a chance to climb a coconut tree, and I’ll never try, never. But I am amazed of those who climb coconut trees. They’re like monkeys swaying with leaves of the tree.

Sometime 1990s, I read an article about coconut tree. It is called the “tree of life.” Why? Because coconut tree, from roots to tips are useful and life-giver so to speak. The roots they say can be used as an herb. The trunk is a durable lumber. The leaves can be used for roofing. And of course the coconut fruit has many uses. A grown old coconut fruit can give oil for cooking or for many things. The coconut shell can be used as a bowl. I recall a family I used to visit in the 80s and 90s that used coconut shell as their bowls during mealtimes. And most importantly, coconut fruit has a water in it. In the Philippines, it is called buko juice.

I came across this print ad during our visit at mall of Asia. To my surprise, Buko juice in other countries is called coconut water. “Why water?,” I asked a friend. According to her, which I am more or less agree than disagree, it is more appropriate to call it water, because a juice is being extracted from a fruit while a water is not.  Coconut water is water not a juice.

Coconut water or buko juice, however you call it, it truly a refreshing drink. Have a drink now!

E.C. Ortiz & Co., LLP

Some success stories had small beginnings. Some are eerie but they just happened. Google founders built the search engine giant in a garage. Now, Google is one of best workplaces in the world. It is a multibillion dollar firm that revolutionized online business and marketing. Other businesses large and small are now anchored on Google for their business operations. Facebook was built by a Harvard student in an apartment room. Now, Facebook has more than 800 million users. If it is a country, the population is the third largest in the world, next to China and India. Its founder Mark Zuckerberg is the fastest rising young billionaire in the world. Social networking, because of Facebook, has become a daily habit for many.

E.C. Ortiz & Co., LLP is not as big as Google or Facebook. But it also had a humble beginning. The founder, Edilberto C. Remembering Whitney Houston

My father taught me how to sing. He is a guitarist. I remember well he played the guitar frequently during my childhood. The first song that I learned from him was “Devoted to You” by Everly Brothers, that was made popular in the 60s. That was the beginning of my love for music (although music doesn’t really love me). In the elementary grade, I sang when my teacher let me. In the 80s, Whitney Houston was becoming popular. Her hit “Greatest Love of All” was made graduation song in public elementary schools.

Whitney also was at the peak of her career as a singer-performer in the 90s. I was in high school when her album “The Bodyguard” was released and made it to the Grammy’s. The movie of the same title was also a hit. “I Will Always Love You” made it to the number one spot in radio stations’ top 20. That song was our theme song in high school in 1992. When I got my disc man I only had two CDs, Celine Dion and Whitney Houston.

I will always remember Whitney Houston as one of the most beautiful voices of all time.

Dokwayne and Mr. Chinkee Tan at AFP Theater

Dokwayne during the introduction of Mr. Chinkee Tan

In 2010, I and my marketing students (8 of them) attended the first conference of advertising and marketing students of the Philippines. Unforgettable speakers were Gilbert Remulla, Alfred Vargas, and Chinkee Tan. It was the first time I heard Chinkee Tan’s talk. I was amazed and amused. I recalled he was featured at Korina Sanchez’s Rated K, a top rating TV magazine every Sunday. Finally, I heard him talk. This year’s conference of advertising and marketing students of the Philippines encompassed the business administration students. I was informed two days before the conference that I’d be part of the program by introducing a speaker. I was excited and a bit nervous.

Then the day came. My excitement doubled when I saw my name on the program and the name of the speaker I would introduce. To my surprise, Chinkee Tan was the speaker. I really admire this speaker, I bought a book of him in 2010. Before the introduction, I had a chance to pose with him for a picture. His talk was entitled: Chink Positive. The participants were awed when he started speaking. The talk seemed so brief. Anyway, I have his book. I’ll read it over and over again!
