What is love? Dictionaries give descriptions not definitions of love. I’m not sure how sure the words of my instructor in the undergraduate when he said that qualities could not be defined, they can only be described. Love is a sterling quality. What we heard and read about it are how we feel and see it. Because love is conceptual. It doesn’t resemble any physical characteristics. The effect of love is observable but we can’t see love per se. Love endures all things, love never fails as the Bible goes. Truly, it is a description.
Love is not just a mere feeling, it is something that we do. Love is a verb. It is active. It can be performed. There are kinds of love: eros, philia, agape. These are Greek terms that would classify love based on how and to whom it is extended. Eros is a love given to opposite sex. It is a romantic form of love, self-gratifying. Philia is a love extended to friends, family members, and relatives. Agape is the highest form of love. It is a self-sacrificing love. It is the very love that God extends to us.
Almost all relationships (there are bad relationships that’s why it’s not all) are anchored in love. Friendships are based on love. Romantic relationships must also be out of love. It is the perfect bond of union for marriage mates. Our worship for God should be because of love.
Love is a many splendor things as the lyrics of a song goes. It is indeed!
